7 Foods That Will Damage Your Teeth

7 Foods That Will Damage Your Teeth
7 Foods That Will Damage Your Teeth
For children, trips to the dentist are scary, mostly because it’s unknown territory. They can still be scary for adults, only now it’s because we know what to expect—and how much it’s going to cost. So keeping our teeth clean and healthy is high on the priority list, which is why we’ve compiled this list of 7 Foods That Will Damage Your Teeth

Here 7 Foods That Will Damage Your Teeth

1.  Apples
Apples are high in acid, are surprisingly hard on your enamel. While a daily apple may keep the doctor away, the acid might keep your dentist on speed dial. Eating apples is fine, just be sure to rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash shortly after.

2.  Hard candy
A post-meal mint may seem like a smart choice, especially if you indulged in the Caesar salad at lunch, but Dr. Vogl says you could be doing more harm than good. “Mints, cough drops or hard candies that you suck on have a demineralization effect," he says, "because usually the lozenge ends up sitting in one area for longer periods of time and you get a very concentrated build-up of acid.” But don’t think you're doomed to have bad breath. “If you use lozenges of any kind on a regular basis," Dr. Vogl suggests, "you should consider getting sugar-free versions.”

3.  Ice is for chilling, not chewing
You’d be surprised at how many people think ice is good for their teeth. It’s made of water, after all, and doesn’t contain any sugar or other additives. But chewing on hard substances can leave your teeth vulnerable to a dental emergency and damage enamel. Advice: Break the habit and enjoy water in its liquid form.

4.  Pickled vegetables
Pickles are made with vinegar, which is acidic, and often sugar as well. While the vegetables are healthy, the brine is can damage your teeth. Drinking water with your meal helps wash away acids and sugar, but remember to brush an hour later.

5.  Sodas and fruit juices
Once again, sugar is the bad guy when it comes to these sweet beverages. But don’t stress out too much over them. “Unless you’re keeping the soda in your mouth for extended periods of time, or have the habit of swishing the soda around your teeth before swallowing, the demineralization effect can be minimized by drinking some water right after. In addition, keep a stash of straws on hand at all times, to keep the liquid away from your teeth as much as possible.

6.  Watch your citrus intake
The truth is that frequent exposures to acidic foods can erode enamel, making teeth more susceptible to decay over time. So even though a a squeeze of lemon or lime can turn a simple glass of water into a fun beverage, it's not always the best choice for your mouth. Citric fruits and juices can also irritate mouth sores. Make sure to drink plenty of plain water

7.  Popcorn
Popcorn is notorious for getting stuck in your teeth, and the areas between your teeth will cultivate more bacteria for that reason. It’s okay to treat yourself to a bag of popcorn as long as you rinse with water and remember to floss and brush after.

How to Treat a Child With a Cold at Home

How to Treat a Child With a Cold
How to Treat a Child With a Cold
Colds are the worst. They can keep you in bed, and can cause you to miss school or work. They can also be very painful, especially if your child has it

Here 6 tips How to Treat a Child With a Cold
1.   If the child is coughing
set them upright in their beds at night, and turn on the humidifier. Add some salt to it, it helps the steam come out more profusely.

2.   Keep them home
If your child has a fever over 101°, or any fever just as he is starting to get sick, keep him home,Even if your child doesn't have a sky-high fever, consider keeping him home if he's too sick to take part in school activities or if he is contagious.
Staying home may help your child get better more quickly and avoid spreading germs to his peers.

3.   For sore throats, use a mix of apple cider vinegar (about 2 tbsp) in one cup of cool water, and a tablespoon of honey.
Heat that up in the microwave for 30 seconds, stir, and have your child drink. It doesn't taste very good, but it soothes the throat within seconds.

4.   Prevent dehydration
Keeping children well hydrated is especially important when they are sick.Frozen Popsicles and even good old-fashioned chicken soup will also ensure that your child is sufficiently hydrated.

5.   For runny/stuffy noses,
The humidifier works as well, but always make sure the child has tissues somewhere near them; if they suck back the nasal mucus, it will give them ear infections, making the cold worse.

6.   Keep their hands clean
Teach your children to wash their hands regularly, especially after coughing or sneezing and before eating. This habit can go a long way to stop the spread of disease and keep them healthy. A good trick to make sure they wash thoroughly is to tell them to sing "Happy Birthday" twice.

How to Get Kids to Eat Healthier

how-to-get-kids-to-eat-healthier
How to Get Kids to Eat Healthier
Most kids do not particularly enjoy eating "healthy" foods. So what your children learn to eat at home early in life sticks with them well into adulthood.

Here are 5 tips How to Get Kids to Eat Healthier
1.   Give foods fun names
i.e. Tally's wiggle macaroni and cheese. You can also name things after them or fun T.V characters they like, for example Micky Mouse.

2.   Be a good role model.
Most of the parents we know complain that their children refuse to eat healthfully. The real problem most often lies with the parents, not the kids
Most of us are so accustomed to eating out and buying prepared foods in the grocery store that we don’t even know what good food is anymore. In order to be good role models we must educate ourselves first and then practice what we preach.

3.   Don't nag about unhealthy choices.
When children choose fatty, fried, unhealthy foods, redirect them by suggesting a healthier option.

4.   Experiment with fun colors and shapes.
Could you cut that sandwich or fruit into a star or heart shape with a cookie cutter?

5.   Sit down to family dinners at night.
If this isn't a tradition in your home, make it one. Research shows that children who eat dinners at the table with their parents have better nutrition and are less likely to get in serious trouble as teenagers. Start with one night a week, and then work up to three or four, to gradually build the habit.

How to Protect Your Kids from Secondhand Smoke

How to Protect Your Kids from Secondhand Smoke
How to Protect Your Kids from Secondhand Smoke
Secondhand smoke is the combination of smoke that comes from a cigarette and smoke breathed out by a smoker. When a non-smoker is around someone smoking, they breathe in secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke is dangerous to anyone who breathes it in. There is no safe amount of secondhand smoke. It contains over 7,000 harmful chemicals, at least 250 of which are known to damage your health. It can also stay in the air for several hours after somebody smokes. Even breathing secondhand smoke for a short amount of time can hurt your body.
Here 6 steps How to Protect Your Kids from Secondhand Smoke :
1.   Don’t Believe the Myths
Many adults think they understand the dangers of secondhand smoke. But they are exposing their children to harmful effects of secondhand smoke when they believe they are limiting their exposure.
Don’t buy into the myths. Find out more about the myths of secondhand smoke and other ways to use the health of your kids as motivation to quit

2.   Smoke outdoors.
Make it a rule to never smoke inside the home, even in the middle of winter. Indoor smoke builds up and anyone in proximity to that smoke is a target of the carcinogenic chemicals and respiratory irritants cigarette smoke contains. The chemical particles also fall onto the household furniture, upholstery and walls, and continue to emit potentially damaging chemicals long after the cigarette is extinguished, not to mention the stale odor of tobacco smoke. Standing on your driveway and lighting up may be bad for people who pass by, and smoke in the yard can easily go over walls and fences, however, smoking outdoors is always the best choice: The smoke will naturally dissipate much faster outdoors than indoors. Smoking in your home is similar to smoking in a car with the windows rolled up, except that the effects are more instant in a car rather than more long term in a home.

3.   Explain the dangers when kids are old enough to understand.

4.   Never smoke in the car.
It is never okay to smoke in a car when you have kids, even when your kids are not in the car with you, because the smoke residue lingers and off-gases when the kids are in the car. Rolling down a window helps some, but can blow the smoke directly into your kids' faces.

5.   Avoiding indoor public places that allow smoking

6.   Ask babysitters not to smoke.
This can be difficult, especially if you are asking grandparents or friends to babysit, but you must be firm for the sake of your children's health.

How to Protect Your Kids From Becoming Addicted Smokers

How to Protect Your Kids From Becoming Addicted Smokers
How to Protect Your Kids From Becoming Addicted Smokers
Kids exposed to secondhand smoke take nicotine and other chemicals into their bodies just like smokers. The more smoke, the more chemicals...no amount of secondhand smoke is considered safe.

If you, or someone in your family, smokes and you have children, then it is important to ensure that they are not the recipients of secondhand cigarette smoke, which is classified as a known human (Group A) carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Children who live with smokers are more likely to develop:
  • asthma
  • bronchitis
  • pneumonia
  • colds
  • coughing/wheezing
  • sore throats
  • ear infections
  • eye irritation
  • allergies
It is even more damaging to children whose lungs and immune systems are still developing. Given the reality that the statistics highlight, the less exposure your kids have, the better.
What parents say, how they act, and the values they communicate through their words and deeds has an enormous influence on children; and that applies to tobacco use, as well

Specifically, parents can take the following actions to help ensure that their children remain (or become) tobacco-free

1.   Stop smoking.
If you or anyone else in your home smokes, the most effective way to prevent harm to the kids is to quit (or persuade the resident smoker to quit) as soon as possible.

2.   If you smoke, share your struggles to quit with your children.
Kids greatly underestimate how difficult it is to quit smoking. Showing how hard it is to quit (and making sure quitting doesn’t look easy) can help eliminate this misperception.
Continuing to try to quit, despite the difficulties, also sends a strong anti-smoking message

3.   Tell your kids that you don’t want them to smoke and will be disappointed if they do.
Parental attitudes, opinions, and feelings about their kids’ smoking status greatly influence whether or not kids will smoke, even when the parents smoke

4.   Make sure your kids have the facts they need.
By making sure that their kids know how harmful smoking is, parents can help their kids to develop a firm, negative perception or attitude about smoking practices and their consequences, and kids with such negative perceptions or attitudes are less likely to smoke.

There's no medical treatment for autism itself, but medicine may help with some symptoms. Anti-psychotic medicines may be given for serious behavior problems. One drug in this category, Risperdal, has FDA approval to help with aggression, self-injury, and tantrums in autistic children. If seizures are an issue, an anti-convulsant drug may help. Drugs that treat depression are sometimes prescribed. A child’s response to medications should be closely monitored.

Treatment: Sensory Integration
Children with autism may be extremely sensitive to sounds, touch, taste, sights, or smells – similar to a condition known as sensory integration disorder. For example, they may be upset by bright flashing lights or a school bell. Flu Shots For Baby And Children

Flu Shots For Baby And Children Ideally should be vaccinated every October or November. However, it may take longer for a full supply of the vaccine to reach certain locations.

Flu Shots For Baby And ChildrenThis year, the number of doses is driven by the pandemic Flu virus component of the vaccine show that children do not respond well to a single dose of the 2009 H1N1 vaccine. A single does not provide protection to a very large number of young children. Because children under age 9 do not
develop strong immune

Children Who Should Be Vaccinated ?

Children who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy should also be immunized against the flu     because they are at higher risk for Reye syndrome, a life-threatening disease, if they get the flu
  • Children who come in direct contact with a person vulnerable to complications from influenza should also be vaccinated.
  • all healthy children between ages 6 months and 18 years old
  • In addition, any child over the age of 2 years with a condition that requires regular medical care or who has been hospitalized for a serious illness
  • Children over age 5 who have a higher risk for serious illness.

What about Flu Shot For Baby?

We know pregnancy changes a healthy woman's risk of severe flu illness. We had a number of pregnant women die last year of flu.

Pregnancy and flu are a bad combination. Pregnancy increases the risk that a healthy woman who gets the flu will get sick, be hospitalized, or die.
All pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy are recommended to have the seasonal flu jab this winter, which will protect the unborn child and mother for around one year.
The flu vaccine is safe to have at any stage of pregnancy or while breastfeeding
Because the flu shot is only a protein that can't give a person the flu, the benefit of vaccination far outweighs any possible risk from the vaccine itself. That goes for the woman as well as for her developing baby . We have never had the slightest indication -- no indication at all -- that it could somehow be harmful to the developing baby
And is there any benefit for the baby? It is worth saying that in addition to protecting the mother, there is some research that suggests babies born to vaccinated women are less likely to get the flu in their first 6 months of life. And infants who get the flu are at very high risk of severe complications

I got Flu Shots For my Baby And Children last year and the year before. Why do I need another one?

The problem is the flu virus: It changes all the time
Last year's vaccine is not like this year's vaccine. One or more of these components is changed every year because the virus trying to prevent has changed.

Unfortunately, being immune to one of last year's viruses may not protect you against this year's virus. It is a constant job of catch-up. And there probably is some waning of immunity over time, too, particularly with the shots.

Researchers are looking for a way to make a vaccine that is not so sensitive to change in the virus. looking for a one-shot vaccine that will protect for get every five or 10 years. But that vaccine has yet to be invented.
